Soyeon (소연), also known as Jeon So Yeon (전소연), is a South Korean rapper, singer-songwriter, and producer under CUBE Entertainment. She is the leader, main rapper, vocalist and center of South Korean girl group (G)I-DLE
As a soloist, she goes by her full name Jeon Soyeon. She made her solo debut on November 5, 2017 with the single "Jelly".
Early life[]
Jeon So-yeon was born on August 26, 1998,[1] As a child, she had a diverse upbringing, attending a Buddhist kindergarten,[2] before being homeschooled and later enrolling in Kuryong Elementary School. During her time there, she immersed herself in ballet, entering and winning numerous competitions.
She quit ballet to pursue a career in music. She secretly attended, and failed around 20 to 30 singing auditions.[3] Soyeon later decided to pursue rapping, and received calls of interest from agencies in South Korea.With the interested parties' direction of music being different from hers, she let go of her dream of becoming a singer and picked up dancing again. It was then that she began performing as a street dancer.[3]

Pre-debut[]
2014 Soyeon seeing Cube Entertainment's audition poster, Soyeon decided to attend the Incheon auditions and became a trainee at the company.[3]

2016-2017: Produce 101, Unpretty Rapstar, "Jelly"[]
In January 2016, Soyeon became a contestant on the survival show Produce 101, where she represented Cube Entertainment. She remained a popular contestant throughout the show's run, peaking at 10th place on the fifth episode. She ranked 20th place in the final episode, thus being unable to debut with I.O.I.[4]
In July 2016, Soyeon appeared as a contestant in the third season of the rap competition show Unpretty Rapstar.[5] Soyeon finished the show as the second runner-up, and three of her tracks were included on the show's final compilation album.[6]
On December 29, 2016, Soyeon signed an exclusive contract as an artist under Cube Entertainment.[7]
She officially debuted on November 5, 2017, with the digital singles "Jelly"[8]
2018: "Idle Song", debut with (G)I-DLE and collaborations[]

On February 28, she released her second digital single, "Idle Song".
Then, on April 12, she was officially revealed as the fifth member of (G)I-DLE.[9] The group officially debuted on May 2 with the release of their first mini album I am.
On August 8, 2018, it was announced that Soyeon would participate in a girl group project called Station Young for SM Station's X 0 alongside Red Velvet's Seulgi, Kim Chung-ha, and GFriend's SinB.[10] Station Young released their first song, "Wow Thing", on September 28, 2018.[11]
On October 26, 2018, it was confirmed that Soyeon would perform at the League of Legends World Finals Opening Ceremony 2018, along with Miyeon, Madison Beer and Jaira Burns. The four singers provided vocals for the virtual K-pop girl group K/DA, with Soyeon voicing Akali.[12]
2020:"DESSERT" and collaborations[]
On July 22, Soyeon helped write and featured on DJ Hyo's "DESSERT" with rapper Loopy.[13]
On August 27, 2020, Soyeon reprised her role as League of Legends character Akali in "THE BADDEST"[14] and "More", on K/DA's EP ALL OUT.
2021: Solo comeback with Windy, first win[]

On May 21, Cube Entertainment confirmed that Soyeon was preparing for a solo comeback sometime in June.[15] It would be her first comeback in three years. On June 17, it was announced that Soyeon would be returning with her first mini album Windy on July 5.
On July 13, she received her first music show win as a solo artist on The Show for her album's title track "BEAM BEAM".[16]
It was announced, on October 21, that Soyeon would be one of the four mentors of MBC reality survival show My Teenage Girl.[17] In an interview in November, she revealed that the reason she wanted to participate is that she herself has participated in multiple survival shows, so she can understand the contestants' hardships and share the tips she's learned now that she has debuted as an idol.[18] Once the first episode was broadcast on November 28, Soyeon went viral as people were impressed with her honesty: she criticized the way people had voted for what she called the "worst performance" of the day and asked people to vote responsibly by priorizing the trainees' talents.[19]
2023-2024: "A-moono-ke", "NOBODY", Contract renewal discussions[]
On February 23, it was announced that Soyeon would be one of four mentors on MBC's reality survival show, Fantasy Boys.
On August 13, Soyeon appeared on the show King of Mask Singer. As the masked singer 'Flower Wind', she sang "Two Melodies" by Zion.T and "UGLY", by 2NE1.
On August 23, Soen participated in Moono's collaboration single "A-MOON-OK (I'm OK)".
On November 6, 2023, M:USB released a trailer video announcing that a member from (G)I-DLE, aespa and IVE would be releasing a special collaboration single "NOBODY".[20] Soyeon was confirmed to be part of the recording on November 10,[21] followed by IVE's Liz[22] and aespa's Winter.[23]

On August 6, Cube Entertainment revealed that Soyeon's contract is due to expire in November and they are currently in discussion to renew her contract.[24]
On October 25, it was reported that Soyeon would be leaving Cube Entertainment after her contract expires next month. However, Cube Entertainment responded that they are still discussing a contract renewal with her.[25]
On November 30 during the MMA Awards, Soyeon said that all of the contestants have renewed their contracts. On December 2, Cube Entertainment officially announces the renewal of all (G)I-DLE members' contracts.[26]

Among female idols of all time, including the current generation, she is evaluated as a rapper with the highest level of skills.
He mainly uses sharp rapping and skillfully uses various tones thanks to his wide vocal range for a rapper who can cross low and high notes. Their brilliant vocalization and accurate diction, which show their true value on the live stage, are a bonus. She is the group's general producer who goes beyond simply creating songs and plans the group's image, album concept, storytelling, visuals, music videos, comeback plans, etc., and even touches on merchandise and MD. It wasn't planned from the beginning to be the group's producer. The agency's situation was chaotic at the time of debut the group and Jeon Soyeon, who knew how to compose in such a situation, wrote the song and submitted it. "LATATA", which was initially thought to be difficult to chart, achieved success that far exceeded expectations. Jeon So-yeon continued to set the group concept and became the driving force to compose (G)I-DLE's songs. As a result, his influence expanded as time went by, and he began to dabble in music videos, concept photos, and even the members' visuals, and from the time of TOMBOY's comeback, he was officially given the title of general producer.
The best skills are elegant melody making ability and part placement. The ability to come up with a catchy top line is outstanding, and he actively utilizes it by putting it in the appropriate position in the song or leaving it to the member who can best handle that part, creating a powerful killing part. Although (G)I-DLE's unique feel is consistently incorporated into these melodies, they flexibly avoid self-replication through delicate variations.
